Walking Again

“Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart,” Psalm 37:4, NIV.
God knows what we need. He’s even willing to impart that information to us. We just need to be willing to listen—without doubt and ready to obey.
Sometimes what we view as impractical or even ridiculous is exactly what God wants us to see and experience.
I was having a difficult time writing a devotional this week. Nothing seemed to inspire me. I didn’t sense God’s leading or purpose. I tried to recreate inspiration, but that never works. So, I prayed and waited.
As I was spending time with God, the Holy Spirit said, “Let’s go for a walk.”
Now that might seem like a simple request, but I’m recovering from a six-week bout of pneumonia with two relapses. It has left me physically weak. Two months ago I was walking two plus miles almost daily, with some steep hills thrown in. Today I walked down my driveway, and about 10 houses to the right before needing to turn around. Needless to say, I’m out of shape.
I need to start over.
Starting over can be a mental challenge as it is a physical one. I find myself wanting others to know my past accomplishments. I don’t want them to see a weak and feeble woman—10 houses! Seriously?
But the reality is, today I am. I will need to rebuild the muscle I have lost, and the desire to continue. Thank goodness I have a good Father to help me do so.
Your calling to follow Jesus may have a similar story. You started out strong, you were involved in ministry, missions and studied God’s word daily, but now you barely have time to open His Word for encouragement.
Spiritually you are only 10 houses strong, when at one time you were a spiritual marathoner.
So, you’re out of shape. Are you going to lay in bed giving up, or are you going to get back out there and rebuild your spiritual muscles?
The good news is—though you are weak, God is strong. It’s always been about God’s power anyway. He is the one who gives us our daily bread, serves us living water, and walks beside us carrying our burden.
Maybe it’s a good thing I need to start over. I have an opportunity to grow God’s way. He’ll get the credit, yet I gain strength in humility.
How about you? How are you growing?
Father,
Thank You for encouraging me to go for a walk today. You always know what I need. I appreciate Your companionship and Your faithfulness. You have never left me, as You have promised in Hebrews 13:5.
Thank You for giving all of us multiple opportunities to reboot.
“This is the day that the LORD has made, we will rejoice and be glad in it,” Psalm 118:24, NLT.
Amen and Amen.
