Two Ribbons

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus,” Philippians 4:19, NIV.
The key word is “needs.” God does meet His children’s needs. He sees us, loves us, desires a relationship with us and forgives us from all the wrongs we do. He is a good Father.
Sometimes we confuse wants with needs. We desire an outcome or a tangible object so much that we place it in our need's column.
As we learn to submit our wills to God, His list of needs becomes focused clear. We understand what God determines as a need, and we agree.
Yet, like a good Father who doesn’t give us a rock when bread was asked for, He sometimes gives us His goodness in the gifts that meet our deepest wants. These are good gifts from God.
In my life it’s the little things, like getting two pens when one was asked for, that catch my attention. Art discarded by a previous owner left curbside, that now hangs in my house. A perfectly timed smile or a “thinking of you” text lifts my heart.
For others it could be a new Bible with two ribbons. Two places where God can draw the attention of the reader. A scripture text and its cross-reference counterpart.
These seemingly insignificant gifts, when appreciated can bring as much joy as a new car. For joy happens when a heart knows who the giver of the gift is. Our job is to notice and to be grateful that God has paid attention to our needs and desires.
What’s on your need list? If it’s something you can live without, more than likely it’s a want or desire. Are you noticing God's gift?
Father,
You are a good Father who sees our hearts and takes care of them. Help us notice so You receive the appropriate thanks and praise.
I love being drawn near to You—being in Your presence at times is all I need. It’s even better than a glass of cool water on a warm day. Thank You.
I will trust You to continue to take care of me as You have done my whole life. I know my joy in this relationship is to listen to You and obey You. Why would I do anything less? For You are a good Father, and You have never misled me.
Thank You,
Amen.
