Towel Bars and Thighs

Audio cover
Towel Bars and Thighs

“Bless the LORD, oh my soul and all that is within me bless His holy name,” Psalm 103:1, KJV.

Bang! Ouch! The visit to the bathroom in an unfamiliar hotel room in the middle of the night had changed my focus. The moment of contact with an ill-placed towel rack, and my ALL was aware of my situation. “That’s going to leave a big bruise.” And sure enough, it did—large and painful. The pain throbbing in my thigh awakened my mind to a future where shorts and bathing suits would not be part of my wardrobe choices. My soul protested at getting angry—there’s nothing you can do now.

This crash into a towel rack grabbed ALL of my attention—physically, emotionally, even spiritually. I was aware.

It made me think, does the LORD hold this kind of ALL encompassing attention for me? Do I seek and praise Him with my ALL?

There are times I sit at the kitchen table, open His Word, then get up to make coffee, then back to His Word. Only to be interrupted by a text, then back to the Word, etc.

It obviously took me crashing into something to remind me that I have the capability to be totally consumed about something. In this case it was a bruise. But can’t I apply my ALL to God? Isn’t God’s Word worth my full focus? Isn’t God’s Word worth my undivided time?

I have learned, since I have the ability to give my ALL to something, why not make it praise for my LORD.

He is worthy of ignoring or postponing texts. He is worthy of my focus. He is so worthy. He has earned this respect and praise—He lived a perfect life, died a horrific death, and miraculously rose from the dead—never to die again. He has been given the authority to reign over heaven and earth; this qualifies Him of being worthy.

But it’s His ongoing love for His creation—for us—that catches my breath, and I join the angels singing— “Holy, Holy, Holy is the LORD God almighty.” With hands raised, I sing. For He is holy.

What has your full attention? Your complete affection? Let it be the LORD—even just for a moment let’s focus on our LORD. And let’s praise His name with our ALL.

Father,

Thank You that the bang wasn’t worse. Thank You that it healed quickly. Thank You that You are still using teachable moments with Your children.

You provide everything we need to get the job done. Everything. And then You graciously turn it into a moment where we learn from You. Thank You.

Amen.
