Support

"Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ," Galatians 6:2, NIV.

"A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for a time of adversity," Proverbs 17:17, NIV.

"Not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others,” Philippians 2:4, NIV.

My hand gripped the railing, and I thought, ‘walking up these stairs with a hurt knee, is like moving through a trial. It’s one step at a time.’ I held on and used the thin log of a rail, smooth and round, to assist me with every pain-filled step. I did have a choice, I could climb each step on my own and suffer as my knee bent into a position that was deeply uncomfortable, or I could reach out and use the support provided.

The railing offered an anchor my knee had long forgotten. It was stable, secure, and tried and true. Many have grabbed this same rail to slide down on, to lean against or as I was willing to do, bring balance to a climb.

Who knew that going to the restroom would create such a monumental moment for me. But it’s only a teachable moment if I remember what God wanted me to learn.

He wants me to learn that leaning on others for support during a trial is a wise thing to do, it is not weakness. There’s wisdom in seeking out a trusted friend for their insights or prayers. Their support can help me climb through a trial with a bit of encouragement and hope. Their support can make the difference between a long difficult season, and one that’s painful yet has no lasting sting.

We need each other. We were created for community which allows us to give and receive help.

Sometimes we wait until one ask, other times we offer up front. Yet just because we offer doesn’t mean someone is willing or ready to receive our assistance. I think of my grandmother at age 75 crossing the street. My mom offered my nana her arm, and my nana slapped it away! “I’m not that old, I can still walk across the street on my own.” All my mom wanted to do was help.

Because of that story, I’ve been grabbing my son’s arms to assist me since they were still in high school. Even though I was a runner, and had very good balance, I wanted them to know I will always take their arm at any time. Especially now since I need it in earnest.

Do you have a support person or two you can trust and rely on? Are you a person others call when they need help?

Father,

You ultimately are our rails, walkers, canes and our first phone call. You support us every day and, in every way, —thank You.

Help us to notice when others need a hand up and be quick to offer.

Help us also know we, too, can ask for help when there is a need.

Thank You for Your Spirit, Your Word, Your graciousness and Your never-ending love. It’s encouraging to know Your support is always there for us.

Thank You for helping us build a community that honors You and makes You smile—as we love others more than we love ourselves.

We love You.

Amen.

Reading this was like balm on a weary soul. Thank you for the gracious reminder. It can be so easy to offer help but so hard to receive it. But its edifying for everyone and reflects our full dependence on Him!
