Is It Political?

“…from everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked,” Luke 12:48, NIV.
I was shopping the other day and came across a really funny sweater. At least I found it humorous. The sweater itself was nothing to write home about, but the statement caught my eye, twice, as I did a quick double take.
“No crying on the yacht.”
I personally love it. A reminder that when one has much, much is expected from you. To be reminded that we always have something to be thankful for. The “yacht” just kind of highlights the obvious.
For me it’s one of those sayings that makes me think, “Duh,” with a slight chuckle.
Like when the gospels talk about Jesus being in the wilderness, fasting for forty days and nights. Then at the end of his desert retreat, we read, “And he was hungry.” Such an understatement.
I didn’t grasp the underlining political interpretation until later. So, I called my son, and asked him if it would be inappropriate to wear it in public?
His answer was wise and balanced. Never a yes or no from him, always a “depends.” So much like his father.
But it stopped me from rushing out to purchase matching family sweaters for our next vacation.
The sweater isn’t political for me, it’s a reminder to be thankful. My son did point out that it might be political for others, and just to be prepared for a “discussion.”
“Man plans his ways, but God directs his step,” and it’s up to us to pay attention.
I was planning on wearing it this weekend to a family reunion; but taking heed to my son’s wise logic, it would only be if I want to engage in conversation. And this might not be the event to try it out on.
Maybe I’ll wear it to our dinner table tonight, for its virgin voyage. Let’s see if I receive chuckles, eye rolls or questions. Or I can just return it.
I am reminded that my job is to be at peace with all man, as much as it is possible for me to do. Thank goodness for good, godly counsel.
Whose wisdom are you listening to? Your own sage thoughts? A friend’s selfishly motivated ideas? Or someone you know who has the ear of God?
Father,
You are so faithful to us.
You slow me down and nudge me in the direction in which I should go.
Thank You for giving me wise family members who love You. Thank You for Your word that helps me find true peace and understanding.
Also thank You that You have made me, and You know what makes me laugh. Thank You for my sweater's reminder about being appreciative for what we have, large and small.
Help me to put on a grateful heart even if I don’t put on my new sweater.
Thank You for Your love, humor, and course correction.
Amen.

I absolutely love this! I awoke this morning and had just been reading my other devotional, a daily one that I try to read even before I get out of bed. Today’s message was about worry, and to stop worrying long enough to hear God’s voice. So, your “NO CRYING ON THE YACHT” was perfect!! Most of us are so blessed, and yet we can’t still our anxious thoughts long enough to be grateful to our Lord for all of our blessings each day.
P.S. I didn’t take the sweater as political, it was more personal than that for me. So it would probably get me in trouble if I wore it out some place LOL!
