Do I Really Want To See?

“When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life,” John 8:12, NIV.
What does it mean to be the light? Why do we need the light?
When Adam and Eve sinned against God, by disobeying Him, they received the knowledge of good and evil and in this respect, they became like God. They knew right from wrong, and they literally believed they were as knowledgeable as God. They chose to trust and follow their own limited finite thoughts and ideas. They, therefore, believed they didn’t need God to tell them what to do anymore. They chose poorly, by walking away from the Creator.
They didn’t realize that they were still listening to the wrong, distrustful advice from Satan—who is always pulling people away from God. Whether it was their own prideful voice or Satan’s whisper, mankind chose to ignore God’s good and perfect voice.
Mankind has walked in darkness ever since.
Jesus became light, He is the one that has given us truth and understanding to see what we have become—a people who walk in darkness. The light, God’s truth, made this known to man. But Jesus didn’t just reveal the fact that we are walking in darkness, He made a way for us to walk with Him in truth. To have, once again, that garden of Eden opportunity to walk with God.
To walk with God is not always easy, but it is always good. We don’t like someone pointing out that there is something wrong with us or the choices we have made—we are still embarrassed by revealed truth. Even finding out that we have food on our face, or down the front of our shirt, is embarrassing. Let alone finding out that what we have always perceived to be right, has actually been wrong.
For example—living together before marriage is seen in our country as a practical and acceptable choice. But God said we are not to do this. When we find out that this way of living hasn’t been blessed by God, we can choose to ignore it, like leaving food on our face to dry and harden, or to make it right by changing our ideas and beliefs to reflect God’s.
This is challenging when our culture seems to be moving so far away from God’s truth. When we realize that our ways, our choices have been wrong, we get embarrassed and want to hide from said truth. Like discovering one is naked and therefore ashamed in the garden of Eden, Genesis 3.
But like in Genesis 3, God understood their predicament and made cloths for Adam and Eve.
He does the same today—yet this time God clothes us in His righteousness.
Is our embarrassment keeping us from revealed truth? Are we turning away from the light, and slinking back into our darkness because we are afraid of being embarrassed?
(Feel free to comment. I love hearing your thoughts.)
Father,
You sent Jesus to be our light, thank You. There are times, though, we don’t really appreciate it. We are afraid to have too much exposed in our lives. Embarrassment is a powerful deflector. Help us to understand that You already know all, and it’s we who are hiding from ourselves. Foolish man.
Help us to realize that You are willing to cleanse us from all unrighteousness with gentleness and love. That we have nothing to be embarrassed about in front of You.
You are a good and loving Father.
Thank You for loving us the way You do—tenderly.
Amen.
Amen! Thank you for sharing!💗
Such good and true thoughts, Susie. How we respond to the Light is really a true reflection of the condition of our heart and what God's ultimate judgment will be based on. It reminds me of what Jesus said in John 3:17-21: "God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him. There is no judgment against anyone who believes in him. But anyone who does not believe in him has already been judged for not believing in God's one and only Son. And the judgment is based on this fact: God's light came into the world, but people loved the darkness more than the light, for their actions were evil.…
