Binds

“Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken,” Ecclesiastes 4:12, NIV.
Young trees need assistance when planted to help their roots find a good footing or holding. A sapling is planted next to two posts and the three are attached by a fastener. Allowing the tree to grow with security.
Recently I walked by such a sight, and as the wind gently blew the tree rubbed against its tie and it could be heard. I stopped to watch and listen for a quick moment. As I did God brought to mind, This tree is pulling against that which binds it.
It reminded me of myself. How often have I pulled against the very thing that was helping me gain a good foothold? How often have I thought, I’m ready to move ahead? Then God says, Don’t pull too hard; you are being held in place for a reason.
I noticed that there were fully mature trees near this sapling that stood rooted and strong. These trees have experienced harsh weather—storms and extremely strong winds—and wildlife. They have been scratched, climbed and the limbs have remnants of last year’s nests. They seem unperturbed by that which surrounds them. Their roots are deep and are not in need of two-post assistance.
My Heavenly Father has allowed certain areas in my life to grow and become strong enough that they are no longer in need of a fastener. Other areas are still being trained.
I am reminded that I am not to let my hubris overshadow my weakness and need for growth. Humility, understanding and knowledge are the beginnings of an amazing journey with God. If we walk on His path with guidance, our maturity will help our King. His kingdom will benefit from our trained service; not be hindered by the lack of our growth.
Are we pushing against that which God has bound together? Are we struggling to be free because we disagree with God and claim we are ready?
Father,
You are a good Father. Help us understand that’s who You are, and that You are not a killjoy. You don’t seek to make life more difficult than it already is. You are actually there with us, helping us to navigate our treacherous and sometimes tedious paths. You are truly for us, not against us.
Thank You for binding us to You as we learn to walk.
Thank You that You gently hold us as we learn to trust and obey You.
You, again, are a good God. A God who sees ahead as well as behind and leads us well.
Forgive us for kicking against the goads (Acts 26:14). For insisting on our own way.
Help us relax at Your touch, and to be thankful You chose to walk with us.
Amen.

A great reminder to continue letting God have His way in us, whatever that may be, wherever that may lead. He knows best and will accomplish and produce in us what is good, right, and true as we let Holy Spirit transform us from the inside out.
"Teach me your ways, O LORD, that I may live according to your truth! Grant me purity of heart, so that I may honor you. With all my heart I will praise you, O Lord my God. I will give glory to your name forever, for your love for me is very great." (Psalm 86:11-13)
