Abandoned

“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise— in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
Psalm 56:3-4, NIV.
I once overheard someone say, “I feel like God has abandoned me.” I’d say, if I had been part of that conversation, “I’m sorry you feel that way. So did King David. You are not alone.”
When David was pursued by Saul, his life depended on how well he could hide. Once promised a kingdom to rule, now he squatted in caves. With no closets, no bathrooms, no extra blankets, no servants to help him, David needed to rely on his own wit to survive.
During these moments in cold, dark, damp caves he wrote, "I will put my trust in you." We could actually add “still,” because David reportedly had many moments feeling abandoned. Yet, he still prayed, still thanked God, and still continued to trust Him.
Whereas David hid under the covering of a cave, we hide at times under the coverings of our blankets. But are we still praising God throughout those dark and confusing moments? David did, so we know it can be done. I personally know how difficult that is to accomplish, but to know of someone had success in praising God while suffering, encourages me to do the same.
To praise God and remember who He is, takes the focus off of our circumstances and places our attention on the throne room of God. We then remember—God is, and it’s in Him whom we gain strength, courage to fight, or hide with inward dignity, knowing we haven’t been forsaken.
When David realized he had concrete assurance that God would not abandon him, he actually said, “What can man do to me?” Man cannot take God away from me, so I am content.
How are you doing this morning? Are you lacking conviction? Stumbling in the dark?
Turn on the light. Turn on the light of God. He will draw near to those who draw near to Him (James 4:8).
Our circumstances may or may not change quickly, but our attitudes can, which could potentially change the trajectory of your life. Start with praising the one who will never leave you nor forsake you. Just say thank You.
(Consider leaving a comment, that’s how we learn from each other.)
Let’s pray-
Father,
You do so much for us, Your children. Thank You.
When we are overwhelmed, You show up to comfort. When we are anxious, You provide peace. When we are afraid, You keep us company.
Thank You for never leaving us nor forsaking us.
When we hide, You hide with us. Thank You.
We ask for courage to see another day made for You, and one You have made for us. Help us to recognize it and to praise You for it.
Thank You Father, that while we might not be able to see what’s ahead, You can. Help us trust in Your leading—always.
Amen.

I know in the past I’ve found that by focusing on His many blessings - often in the midst of struggle- I am reminded of His great love and provision for me… and most importantly of the fact that He was (and still is) there!
